Exceed And Excel filly We Have Lift Off made a winning start to life under a new trainer when taking out the Pluck@Vinery Maiden Plate (1100m) at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The veteran of just one start was resuming off a year long break and have her first start for new trainer Brad Widdup when leading all the way under a perfectly judged ride by Christian Reith, who sat quietly aboard his mount until the final 200 metres.

“She was first-up off quite a while so she was always going to empty out,” Reith told Sky Racing.

“I just had to make sure she had all the carrots in the tank when I let her go and she did that and she’s got more improvement in her yet.”

We Have Lift Off ($3 eq fav) defeated the Brent Stanley-trained Zoology ($4.40) by three-quarters of a length with another half-length back to Peter and Paul Snowden’s League Of Nations ($3 eq fav) in third.

We Have Lift Off is a daughter of stakes-placed mare Houston Benefactor and was purchased for $170,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale last year but Widdup said he’s in no rush to travel her to the rich Magic Millions raceday next month.

“I think we’ll see what happens but there’s always next year for that (Magic Millions raceday),” he said.

“There’s no rush, plenty of racing around and she still needs to get a bit smarter but she’s going the right way.”
